STOP THE PRESSES: WHAT IS THE FUTURE OF NEWSPAPERS?

As the mainstream press continues to downsize and alternative media grow, many are pronouncing newspapers dead and the Internet and blogosphere the new information sources. Geneva Overholser, director of the School of Journalism at the USC Annenberg School for Communication, and Jane Hamsher, founder of Firedoglake.com, discuss the survival of old media outlets in an era when readers, listeners, and viewers can find their own news sources online. Overhosler was editor of The Des Moines Register from 1988 to 1995, where she led the paper to a Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. Jane Hamsher is the author of the best selling book Killer Instinct and has produced films such asNatural Born Killers and Permanent Midnight.

Moderated by Ian Masters—journalist, commentator, author, screenwriter, documentary filmmaker, and the host of the radio program Background Briefing on KPFK 90.7FM.

According to their website, “Office Depot is providing free copies of resumes, up to 25 single-sided pages, as well as free faxing to five different domestic numbers, up to 25 pages in total.”

Despite what our cybernet culture might imply, you can’t assume that just because you emailed your resume the person interviewing you will have a copy on hand. So, it’s smart to bring a copy of your resume to an interview.  It will help you look prepared and professional.

2. Locate the narrow alley on the left hand side of Full House.
3. Walk about 20 feet down the alley (away from the street).
4. Stop.
5. Notice dumpster on your right hand side.
6. Take a right and continue down the alley.
7. Exercise caution so as not trip on the wobbly cement blocks underfoot
8. The entrance to Betalevel is located 10 yards down on left side,  behind a red door, down a black staircase.

ARTIST TALK: NIC HESS

For the Hammer’s Lobby Wall, Swiss artist Nic Hess presents Automatic Crash Response, a mixture of images in tape ranging from tombstone- like monuments of several recently failed banks, animals, how-to exercise diagrams, a generic shopping cart, the USPS logo and more to weave a lyrical quasi-narrative left for the viewer to decode. Join us as Nic Hess discusses Automatic Crash Response, as well as his other works.

Followed by a Q&A.
